Field note 03
Designing privacy into sensing products
Privacy is not only a policy page. For ambient sensing, it has to shape the product decisions from the beginning.
A responsible sensing product should collect less when less is enough, explain what it is trying to understand, and avoid language that makes the system feel more certain than it is.
Parallax favors a restrained product vocabulary: context, patterns, awareness, and review. We avoid claims such as medical-grade, certified safety, or guaranteed detection unless those claims are formally validated.
The result should be technology that can help a space respond better without making the people inside it feel watched.
